Social Media: What I Learned From Losing My Peace

Away from everyone, sprawled on my bed, and eyes glued to my phone….
This would go on for 2-3 hours every night, scrolling through social media,
watching YouTube videos, you name it. As long as my eyes were able to stay fixed to the beautiful glow of my small device, I was content...or so I told myself.

What are the Facts?
Studies from King University have shown that phone users swipe, click, tap, etc. an average of 2,617 times per day.

Jamie Zelazny, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine stated that, "Teens who reported using social media sites more than 2 hours a day were much more likely to report poor mental health outcomes like distress and suicidal ideation. A study done the following year found that problematic internet use resulted in poor mental health outcomes longitudinally, and these were mediated by poor sleep." Click here for more

I Saw the Cage, But Couldn't Walk Out
I remember the feeling of discontentment in my own self. I knew this addiction that increased my anxiety, headaches, feelings of restlessness, poor sleep, and frustration was actually hurting me and my family, but it was easier to just say yes and give into my passions and urges. Deep down though, I felt suffocated. The fulfillment just wasn't there.

My addiction to technology not only hurt me, but those around me. I remember how hurt my little sister was when I ignored her for my phone. How she'd ask over and over for me to play with her, trying to get my attention in any way she could. After a while she stopped asking as much, but she didn't stop growing up. I realized how much time I lost with her and it broke my heart.

I've been striving to spend more intentional time with her now, but I still cry about it to this day how I hurt her, because I'll never get back those times when we could've grown closer in our relationship. All she wanted was to spend time with me and be loved, but I was too selfish to see it. This is just one of the many ways in which making technology my god has negatively affected my life.

The Key
However, this past year, I became a part of a community that challenged us to limit our phone time. I formed beautiful friendships in my community and strengthened my relationships in my family. I started to learn new hobbies and pastimes. I finished books that I had put off reading and started new ones, learned how to embroider, practicing my cooking, and started making rosaries!

Another tool I learned earlier this year is mindfulness, which involved me relaxing my body and intentionally entering into my prayer time with God. The next hobby I really want to accomplish is calligraphy or script. All of these new hobbies and tools didn't trigger my anxiety like my phone did, but relaxed me and allowed me to process my thoughts swarming in my head. I started to feel so proud of myself and was able to bring joy and love to others through these hobbies.

Now I'm not saying technology or social media is evil as a whole, but whenever anything is abused or used in excess, it can bring us out of virtue and further away from who we are called to be.

Everything in moderation.

Life can seem so meaningless when we make technology, drugs, sex, food, and ANYTHING other than God our idol. But when we choose to look up and appreciate all of the blessings before us, we realize just how rich this life is and can be.
