The Mature Goofball

Guess how old I am. I’m going to take every chance I get to make a funny face, to laugh uncontrollably, to put a whoopie cushion on someone’s chair, pull a prank, or even just scream for fun. Is this a 4-year-old writing this? Welp, not quite; I’m actually a whole year past 18. This is just who I am when I want to be (which is whenever I can be). Even if it’s two seconds later, you might find me talking about theology and ethics or arguing about politics with someone. I’m not a bizarre kid, I'm just a very mature goofball.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people call me a kid or claim I wouldn’t be able to understand something. The other day I was asking questions about a rule and instead of an explanation, I was met with: “As you get older you will understand these things more”. I started fuming! I politely ended the conversation a few minutes later and then screamed. What the actual heck!!!?!?

Why do people think that just because I know how to have fun means I can’t understand something?!?! It really makes me tick when they withhold whatever knowledge or explanation they possess out of contempt for my youthfulness. “You’ll understand when you're older” some will say. Well, little does the fool know who says this that understanding and knowledge don’t just come with age! It comes with maturity.

There is a common misconception between a “goofball” and someone who is “immature”. Boomers think I’m immature because I’m a goofball. Wrong! Maturity is knowing when the right time to do something is.

Some might call this prudence. Just because I have fun doesn’t mean I can’t calm down sometimes to comprehend something as simple as social cues and timing! You can have fun and be prudent.

I have found that people who talk this way really don’t care about you. They just want to put a handicap on you. They are just so jealous that they sacrifice having fun to sit at the “big kids table”; well to be honest you can have fun at both places. And that’s something I learned this year in a special way. I realize now that I understand life just as well as the 60-year-old person who is yelling at me for bouncing a ball.

You see, people who tell you you are too young are lying to you. You aren’t too young. Maybe you have to grow in maturity, but by no means does that mean you have to stop having fun or wait till you have a couple of grey hairs and a mortgage to understand something or make a difference in the world.

You can contribute to society regardless of age. Those who tell you otherwise are the problem with society, not you! Never stop asking questions. Because if you don’t ask questions and try to discover a better way of doing something then who will? It’s our job to seek understanding and knowledge; don't let people keep this from you for some absurd reason. In reality, a mature goofball is more likely to understand something because they have diversified experiences.

There is a time to laugh and a time to cry, a time to be silly, and a time to be serious. People act like when you become an adult and mature you have to forget the first one. That’s so false. If you forget to have fun your life is going to suck! Prudence has helped me know at what times it is best to do which one. 1 Timothy 4:12 says: “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you teach, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

It’s time we get rid of this idea that only old people with grim faces and beards can be the examples and the ones to change the world. Christ desires us to have a child-like heart. So laugh a little! Loosen up! Realize that youthfulness is for all ages and maturity comes with a greater understanding of prudence, not the advancement of age. Be who God made you and don’t let someone ruin your day by calling you immature because you are being goofy. Just be a Mature goofball! Prove them wrong.
