The Greater the Surrender, the Greater the Peace

By:  Justin Fatica May 17, 2021

God has put the message of surrender on my heart lately. I’ve recently shared this with the staff and missionaries at HN, and it has resonated with many of them. Scripture tells us over and over about the great peace that is found in surrender. In order for God to do what he wants with me, with the mission He has for my life means that I have to fully surrender.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” -James 4:7-11

What do we love more than Christ?

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.-John 21:15-18

What is holding us back from surrender? What do we love in our lives more than Christ and put ahead of our surrender to him? Where are those places that we do not want to go? Many years ago, when I was working in New Jersey, God put it on my heart to pray about moving to Syracuse, NY. Nothing inside of me felt like I was made to be in Syracuse, but I knew in my heart that I needed to surrender to move to Syracuse. There is nothing that replaces the feeling of peace when we fully surrender to God, and that happened to me. I moved to Syracuse, and this is where God has built up the ministry of Hard as Nails. There is nothing more valuable in my life than God, so I must keep him as my sole focus and love Him more than anything else.

One day at a time!

Surrender is the greatest form of grace, and we gain that grace freely from God. Taking one day at a time, we can trust that he will guide and direct each step. It’s important to take one day at a time, because otherwise we can be easily discouraged and distracted and give up surrender for control.

I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.” -Jeremiah 10:23

I would be fine with one person hating me if that meant there were 100 people loving Jesus. Surrender means that you surrender everything so that others can come to Christ.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” -Matthew 16:24-26

Take Action!

What is it in your life that you need to surrender? Think of the one thing that you can give over to God in order for more people to come to Christ and commit to surrender it today.

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I give my life over to you. I surrender today all of the ways that I am holding back from giving you my entire life. Help me to be open to your grace to love you first. Help me to take one day at a time, and trust your grace to be sufficient. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. Amen.
