A new year is upon us, and Hard as Nails is ready to continue awakening the world to the power of God’s Love by making a world where no one suffers alone. The ministry kicked this year off with its annual Come and See retreat, where young adults from all over are invited for an event experience to see what it is like to live like a Hard as Nails missionary. For this retreat, around twenty participants came from all directions around the country, and all of them had a blast!

Starting off strong, the retreat began with a plethora of activities and other things to do, ranging from scavenger hunts to ice cream socials. In the mix was a prayer workout (a crucial part of the missionary life), and two incredible talks from Hard as Nails co-founder, Brian Greenfield, who spoke on the “You’re Amazing” and “Breakthrough” messages.

The retreat started to come to a head during Eucharistic Adoration in our chapel. During this time, everyone was offered an opportunity to be prayed over by our prayer teams, and so many were greatly impacted, and hearts were moved. Tears, smiles, laughter encompassed this time in the chapel, and all were greatly moved, and one of the missionaries had this to say about the experience:

“The retreat this year was the most impactful Hard as Nails event I've ever been to. At this retreat, we culminated with a night of praise and worship. I was placed on a prayer team, so before we started, I prayed a prayer of surrender asking God to fulfill the breakthroughs of each person there through me that it wouldn't be me who spoke but Christ's words through me. So, throughout the night, people would come and kneel before the Eucharist, and I would pray over them. In all my life I have never prayed so intensely nor seen people so impacted by my prayers, still, my mind had doubts about whether people had breakthroughs or were truly impacted. However, the next day I never received so much encouragement and gratitude. Whether it was a scripture verse I gave to someone or a word I spoke to them, so many people came up to me the next day and thanked me for saying how the words I spoke impacted them in big ways. Sometimes in my mind, I doubt that God is using me to help people, but at the end of this retreat I had no doubt that God used me to spearhead breakthroughs”.

On Sunday, the retreat came to its conclusion, and despite the wintery weather of Syracuse NY, everyone still made it and helped contribute to a great ending for the Come and See. Before the event was wrapped up, all were able to share a “breakthrough” they had throughout the retreat. Many hearts were shared, and one of the missionaries had this say for their breakthrough:

“God always has a way of pulling through when something important is on the line at HN; when pressure comes or time seems like it will run out for any urgent service at hand, it always appears to work out soundly in the end. The same can much be said for this year’s Come and See retreat, for the great obstacle in our path this time was some quite ferocious winter weather. Snow, rain, whipping winds, and bitter temperatures defined the weekend of this retreat, and it came to a terrible head in the form of an ice storm, which completely froze the parking lot of our Center. Cars were sliding everywhere, people could hardly stand straight, and it was difficult to even get through the door. When I saw this icy mess unfold in front of my eyes, I thought the retreat would be cut short, and would be lacking a proper conclusion. However, every attendee came, despite the harsh weather conditions. And in their coming, the participants and my fellow missionaries were able to share their “breakthrough” moments they had over this retreat. To my surprise, these breakthroughs were not small and brief, like saying that the retreat was simply “good” or they “enjoyed it”. In reality, most had to share that their lives had been greatly impacted and their faith was strengthened and deepened by this Come and See. By the end, I took a step back in my mind, and was so grateful to see how God allowed everyone to gather and share their hearts, no matter what obstacles were in our way.”

In the end, the 2022 Come and See retreat was a success, and everyone who came was impacted in one way or another with their own “breakthrough” gained in their life to deepen their faith! We at Hard as Nails are glad that this retreat happened and that we bring in more people to experience the charism and lifestyle of the ministry!
