Suit Up!

Suit up! I’ve heard these two words often in the movies, especially Marvel movies. I think back to the first Avengers movie when Iron Man looks at Captain America and says, “You’re up, Cap.” He then goes and opens up the compartment where his new stars and stripes uniform is. Another scene is when the plane gets blown up and Captain America looks at Tony Stark and says, “Put on the suit” and Tony says, “Yep.” They had to suit up because they were in the middle of an attack.

Throughout all of the superhero movies, you see heroes, old and young, go to put on a suit to prepare for battle. When they have suited up, they are ready to go and fight.

Soldiers in the army, police officers, fire fighters, etc. do the same thing. They put on their uniforms (suits) and go out to fight and they keep you and me safe. They give us the opportunity to live in freedom, without fear. But guess what? You and I are called to suit up too.

Oh yeah, you have a suit. Just like every police officer, soldier, and superhero. I am not talking about a suit and tie either. The suit that I am talking about is one that you cannot see. This suit is your armor. Just like Tony Stark’s suit was Iron Man, and Captain America’s consisted of his shield, Thor of his hammer, and The Hulk his strength. In the same way, your suit is your armor and has all of your weapons with it. This suit of armor is the Armor of God.

"Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to hold your ground. So, stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."~ Ephesians 6:13-17

This is your suit of armor. Just like the superheroes in the movies, you have armor (breastplate and helmet), protective gear (shield), and a weapon (sword). You have truth (the Word of God and the gospel of peace) which is what the heroes fought for: the truth, what was right, and peace.

The Rosary of our Blessed Mother and the name of Jesus are also both great weapons to use that help deepen your faith and grow in love for our Lord.

St. John Mary Vianney said, A good Christian watches continually, sword in hand, the devil can do nothing against him, for he resists him like a WARRIOR in full armor; he does not fear him, because he was rejected from his heart all that is impure.

Take it in, folks. This is what it means to be Christian. It means to live for God with strength through His sacraments bringing you closer to Him giving you courage. Despite being persecuted in the early Church, this was what they did. Every day, the Apostles and Disciples would preach the Gospel; even when they were threatened with imprisonment and death. They would spread the Good News. They would fight the devil with the truth of Christ. Every day they willingly to put on the Armor of God, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, to preach the word of Jesus to many.

Plus, they didn’t fear the devil. Instead, they commanded him to leave people in the name of Jesus just as Jesus did. They were given this power by Jesus himself.

This is how we all need to live. Clad with the armor of God and the truth of the Scriptures and to live without fear of the devil because he has no power over a soul filled with divine grace.

I was doing an activity with a community I was in a couple of years ago. It was a spiritual exercise and the next morning we shared our experiences from the prior night. One of the boys got up and said that after he had prayed for a while, he went to bed. He continued to say that he woke up in the middle of the night and looking around in his darkened room (where he was alone), he felt the evil presence of the enemy (the devil) fill the room. He decided to roll over and go back to sleep.

          What?!?!?!?!

I’ll confess, I would have been terrified if I was that guy!! Heck, I was terrified that night because I was afraid of a supernatural encounter with the devil. I didn’t have an encounter, but that guy did. I was like, “Yep, definitely a possibility!”. From this experience, I learned that I needed to grow in my faith a lot! The excerpt below is an example of the kind of faith needed.

“Smith Wigglesworth heard a creak in his basement one night and went down to see what it was. He saw the devil rocking in the rocking chair and he said, ‘Oh, it’s only you.’ and went back to bed.” ("Unbound" by Neal Lozano, page 162)

So, what I am trying to say is this; we have no need to fear the devil or his works because our God is bigger than the devil. We all need to put on the armor of God so that we can win souls and be the light of Christ in the world. What Smith Wigglesworth and my friend have both shown me is that we need not fear the devil or his works. We can go back to bed and we will be completely safe, as they both proved. All we need is faith and complete trust in Jesus Christ.

So, suit up Christians! It is our turn to take up the fight for God, for our faith, for each other! Heroes are real; YOU can be the hero. SUIT UP!
