Stop Wanting to Get Away from Your Cross!

By:  Karen Pullano June 2, 2021

Nothing new to see here folks. Just the same old cross, the same old suffering, the same old pain. This is one of those weeks where it’s just fresh and raw, and yet distant at the same time. I haven’t seen my daughter in over 8 years! How can that even be? It feels as though at any moment she might walk in the door wearing a familiar outfit and open the fridge while I’m making dinner. And I want her to so badly, it aches where my mother’s heart is. What would it feel like to see her smile and hear her voice again after all this time? And for all that God’s mercy and love is sometimes insane and illogical, I know He is not sending her back. She is not walking in my door. Ever.

And how many times do others hear my story and feel my pain and offer prayers? Aren’t they getting tired of it too?

As I turn to the only place of refuge for comfort, I ask God what He has to say about this tired old cross that I wish could be different, better, gone. Will I ever move on from it? He answers with the same truth, the same love, the same promise of eternity, and the same forgiveness, which never gets old, tiresome, or tedious. I will never tire of receiving anything from God. His truth and love and promises are new every day.

His promises are the reason for my hope, and as long as there is hope, there is joy. This pain then is the key to my joy. Over and over and over. My suffering sure doesn’t feel good or joyful, but I know that it IS.

It’s not true only of suffering, but it is true of our sins as well. Do you struggle with something that you constantly need to confess? No matter how much you try to overcome it and move past it, it lingers on, or worse, leaves you for a time only to come storming back when your guard is down. Perhaps you are remorseful and repent and get to the sacrament of confession again and again, but can’t see any progress. I don’t know about you, but I feel frustrated in this space, whether it be sin or suffering.

But what if these wearisome crosses are the very key to our salvation? When we are weak (and we know it), we are strong. Then God can be God and save us. Again. He never tires of it. He never tires of our struggle. He never gets weary of breathing fresh life into our mess. He never gets tired of saving us!

So, struggle on, my friends. You are not alone!
