Quality Time

Quality time: a love language, an enjoyment, or even a nuisance. Quality time has different meanings for each person, and having it as my primary love language, I see the beauty of it in my life. There’s something really special about spending one-on-one time with someone that you really care about, and even if you don’t really know that person, it’s a great opportunity to learn about them and share your life.

We were created to share our story, our struggles, and our joys with each other. If we keep it all inside, it can become a mess that affects how we perceive the world and how we continue to interact with others. These isolated thoughts have the potential to build up stress and anxiety to take over the mind. Vocalizing this to others builds relationships, and sharing what we go through can help others be open to understanding that they are not alone. It’s crazy to realize that most of us experience many of the same struggles and suffering.

Time is a Treasure
As an introvert, it can be awkward for me at first, but being able to just appreciate the presence of another is worth being uncomfortable in the moment. Texts and calls can be meaningful, but there is nothing like being physically present to someone. In this way, it is easier to read their body language and truly get to know the other person by showing that you actually took time to be there. I see this as a sign that they care for me, and that they care enough to want to be with me. As someone who struggles with feeling unloved or overlooked, quality time is a method of consolation in knowing that there are people who do love me.

The Love of a Father
But, this can be harmful in the way of relying on spending time with others to satisfy my own emotion of wanting to feel loved. Feelings and emotions will always be temporary, and the truth is finding that this desire of love is found in something greater than the comprehension of our emotions. Permanent joy and happiness can only be filled by the Father in Heaven. It’s so easy to say, but really trying to understand this concept is difficult. As someone who has always run to my feelings for comfort, it takes an effort to train myself to really depend on God the Father to fill me with His never-ending consolation. When I don’t feel loved by the world, I know that God will never stop loving me. We were never meant for each other; we are meant for God. Yet, on earth, we need to be there for one another.

Just because there are some cons to quality time, it doesn’t make it bad. God made all things good, but, our intentionality is what really matters. Quality time is a beautiful gift from God, and by being able to relate and spend time with others in a meaningful way, we can start to see how the Father created His children. He brings joy through our encounters with each other. For some people, it can be tough to get out of comfort zones, but it can build a relationship similar to what Christ desires to have with us.
