Do You Realize What an Impact You Have?

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." Mark 9:42

How often do your actions lead others astray? Do you feel proud or content with the way you act in front of them? Do your words lift others up or do they bring them down? Do the things you do glorify Christ or do they scandalize?

Being on the road for the past couple of months with my community has opened my eyes to how impactful an adult's example and presence is to a child....and in a way that scares me. I've seen these pliable and innocent minds conforming and desensitizing to the corruption around them, and that my heart can't help but break when I see how lost they are.

But aren't we, the adults, exactly that -lost. Deep down, many of us are operating on wounds from our childhood. We are formed by hardships, joys, our surroundings, what we are taught and so on.

I can't answer for the one reading this, but I know many who are literally doing the best they can to form the minds they have been given with what they know. God sees their strife and care.

But so many of the kids I've met, whose parents have glorified college, sports, money, popularity, worldly results... do these same parents see the emptiness in their eyes? Do they recognize the starving their kids have for joy, love, and fulfillment that can only be satisfied by Christ alone?

I remember my aunt telling me, when I was around eighteen years old, that every choice I make brings me closer or farther to God. At the time, I didn't want to take it to heart and was annoyed, because who wants to take the time to think before they act? I didn't! I just wanted to have fun, make memories, and see if I'd feel bad about it later!

I laugh now at my stupidity and stubbornness because I had no idea how much torture my sins would cause me and those around me. My anxiety, self-hatred, and grades worsened.

I touched upon this in another blog, but I was severely addicted to my phone. Though it may seem like a lesser evil compared to other addictions, that was not the case.

This addiction manifested into sins of impurity, sloth, selfishness, pride, vanity, gluttony, and suffocated my relationship with my family and God. And in turn, my example with my phone deeply affected my little sister.

She in turn started basing her happiness on having a phone. "What does a phone have that I don't that would make my sister ignore me? Am I not good enough to compete with her phone?" I passed down this belief and sin to my little sister.

So I guess what I want you to ask yourself is this: is there something leading you to sin that you need to overcome? Is there an idol in your life that is negatively affecting you and those in your life? This isn't to make you feel hopeless or to shame yourself, God knows your struggles and your need for Him.

Our God is a good God and still brought glory out of my sinfulness and He will do the same for you. Don't spank yourself!

But I want you to take this as a sign that today is the day to smash the idols that you are enslaved to in your life! Take one day at a time! You are not too far gone. Trust me, I thought there was no hope for me, but God showed me there is nothing impossible with Him. He can still bring glory out of your mistakes. His MERCY and LOVE is so much bigger than your sinfulness!

"Start being brave about everything. Drive out darkness and spread light. Don't look at your weaknesses. Realize instead that in Christ crucified you can do everything.”~ St. Catherine of Siena
