Knowing Your Purpose

What if I am only alive to die in place of someone else? This thought hit me yesterday and made me stop and think. What is my purpose in life? What am I supposed to do or fulfill?

Every person who is born into this world has a specific purpose and plan that they are called to do with their lives. It is their responsibility to seek to understand what that purpose is. It is their choice if they will seek and then accept God’s plan for them. When God made you in your mother’s womb, He already knew what you needed to accomplish in this life. You have a mission that no one else can fulfill because He made you unique.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you.” ~ Jeremiah 1:5
So, I was thinking about this random idea: what if it was my purpose to die in the place of someone else? What if this was the main reason I was put on this earth, besides glorifying God and ultimately be with Him in Heaven? For example, what if two years down the road, I am riding in the car with my family and we get hit by another car. The car is completely crushed and I don’t make it out alive. I die. It may seem like my life had no meaning, like I just died and there was no point. But what if my death saved a life? You’re probably wondering how that could be the case.

Well, if I wasn’t alive right then, then I would not have been sitting in that seat of the car. This means that one of my siblings would have been and they would have died instead of me. But, if God had a different plan for them, then by my sitting in that seat, they were saved to complete their purpose. Maybe that sibling would be the next president of the United States or a doctor who saves thousands of lives. If they were sitting in that seat, they would never have completed the mission that God put them on this Earth to do.

What if my entire purpose, my entire life was just leading up to that moment, so that my siblings would live to do great things?

Thinking of each life’s purpose brought me back to an event that happened a couple of years ago. There was an accident. A little girl who was 4 years old was hit by a car and died. It happened at a family camp where I was helping out. It was completely devastating and difficult for so many people. But, what if her life was leading up to that moment?

I saw what happened after her death. Yes, lots of people were struggling with what happened. It was scarring. But it brought the people at the camp together in a way that never would have happened without that accident. Everyone was praying together in a special way for this girl, her family, and the person who had been driving. Teenagers committed to changing their lives to be free from sin seeing how life could end at any moment.

Her death impacted hundreds of people. I believe her death saved the lives of some of the teenagers at that camp because they decided to change their lives for her. What if she died at that camp to change a specific person who would have made a terrible mistake in the future? What if her purpose in life was to save someone else’s soul?

What if the man who was murdered when his house was broken into was born to die at that very moment? Why? Because his best friend joined the police force because of his death and saved hundreds of people that may not have been saved.

The same can be said for many examples like that mother whose whole purpose in life could be to give birth to that baby boy who ended up finding a cure for cancer. That fast food employee’s purpose was to give that customer a smile that kept him from hurting himself. The Grandmother’s life of 83 years was full of love for her granddaughter so that her granddaughter could show love to her friend, which helped heal her heart. The soldier’s life that led up to him taking the bullet for his brother in arms so that his fellow soldier could live to become the general that wins the war.

You don’t know why you were put on this earth, but God does. I’m sharing this perspective on how to view life to show how we all impact each other if we follow our true purpose in this world. There is a time to live and a time to die and God has a perfect plan for each of us. What is His plan for you? Just ask Him.

“There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. A time to give birth and a time to die…” ~ Ecclesiastes 2:1-2
