Fear: My Greatest Bully

Me: "I don't want to do the lip sync battle with y'all! I've had bad experiences with it."

My Friend: "Don't take yourself so seriously. Have fun with it! Do it for the community."

So I don't know about you, but I was salty at that moment. I didn't want to be guilted into performing. I was freaking out. I flipping didn't want to do it for the community! I just wanted to stay comfortable and out of the spotlight. What if I look like an idiot? ALL of this was running in my mind.

But if I'm going to be completely honest, I wanted to perform. I wanted to not worry. I wanted to go crazy, let loose, and just have fun with everyone! But I kept letting fear steal my joy and hope.

Now this is just a little thing, but how about in the big things? Do you let fear steal your hope for the future? Do you let it prevent you from going out with your friends, because maybe you don't feel confident in the way you look? Do you let fear determine your self worth? Or let it prevent you from helping others because you care what people think?

Do you make Fear your god? Because I know I definitely have.

It can be rational or irrational fear, but whichever one it is, fear is given way to much power in our lives, to where it steals our joy… And that is NOT okay! St. Catherine of Siena, my homegirl and whose feast day is today, said: “Start being brave about everything. Drive out darkness and spread light. Don't look at your weaknesses. Realize instead that in Christ crucified you can do everything.”

You can do anything! Stop limiting yourself or your capabilities! With Christ, there is no limit.

Maybe you're thinking, "Okay, well, what if I do such and such thing and then it doesn't work out?" Okay, maybe it doesn't work out… but at least you tried and now you can scratch that off the list. Now you know though! There is so much freedom in knowing you did the best you could, and now have your answer.

Someone just told me this week, "I don't know how to minister to others? Is my approach the right approach? How should I encourage them? Do they want my encouragement?"

I had to learn this the hard way, and I'm okay with that (I didn't really have a choice haha). But what I knew to be true was that, even if we fear our approach, advice, or encouragement wasn't helpful or well received, but if our heart was in the right place we can rest assured that we did our best to love them. God sees our efforts, and that's all that matters!

My dad always told me, "Do the thing you fear the most, and you control fear." Wow, how true is that? This miniscule bully is just a minion from the devil, the father of lies. Where is the truth or weight in his argument?

What I'm trying to say is… you can do anything. With fear as your companion, you have your worst critic. But with God as your companion, you have the best cheerleader.

I did do the lip sync battle, and I was beaming from ear to ear after. I didn't hold back. I let myself go crazy, and I had the. time. of. my. life… and so can you. Start living NOW.

Encourage your brother or sister in Christ. Dance like a hooligan. Live and love passionately, because in the end you only get one life.

I'm not perfect. I know I still struggle to let fear run my life, but I know I'm striving to fight it… and that's all I can do. And that's all you can do. God so approves of you!
