The Gift of Responsibility: Confirmation Sponsor

By:  Mission Team July 21, 2021

Being a Confirmation Sponsor is an opportunity to be a friend who raises someone to Christ, and it is fun. “Can you be my Confirmation Sponsor?” Have you ever been asked that question? It’s really cool. You feel honored, even unworthy. But is it simply just a title, or is this life changing? I think when you’re asked to be a sponsor you have the opportunity to be the most overpowered mentor. If you say yes, it will be an amazing adventure with that person.

When you are a sponsor of someone, you are invited to be a part of their life in the most intimate way.

Your fight for a relationship with God is the greatest battle you fight. Just like in battle, soldiers need brothers, and when you are a sponsor, you become a big brother who models and raises up a fellow soldier and lover of Christ. In the world today, it is not the status quo to be proud of your religion, or your relationship with Christ. Yet your relationship with Christ is the only way to be and have what you were created for. Therefore, being a confirmation sponsor is uncomfortable. You choose to demonstrate and encourage a way of life that is seen as weak in the eyes of others.

There are so many joys that come along with being a sponsor.

You get to be a better disciple due to having the responsibility. It is not easy to commit to living for Christ, but when there is another soul that is dependent on the way you live, then there is more responsibility in your actions. This will help you in giving Christ what you were not able to give Him before. These greater responsibilities are actually gifts that God gives us to cling to Him and grow closer to Him.

There is no feeling that is better than helping someone, especially someone you love. That is what you are doing, choosing to be of service. Not simply to be there when their life is joyous, but also when their life is falling apart. Sometimes you won’t have any advice, but you do have a presence. As long as you live, the person you are sponsoring will never suffer alone. And it is your goal, to give him through demonstration and presence, a relationship with Christ; so that one day, when you are not there anymore, he will have the presence of Christ in his life to confide and rejoice in.

Do you care for the person you sponsor in this way?

  1. Start with keeping in contact with them regularly. Even if it is simply calling them every month for the rest of their life or shooting them a text. But let them know you are thinking of them.
  2. Pick a day to spend with them, where you can simply encourage them. Even if you aren’t able to spend much money, find what they like to do and spend a day doing it with them.
  3. Commit to praying for them every day. It can be as short as, “Jesus, I pray for…”

Finally, when you have those monthly calls with them, pray with them, for it is in that that you teach them to pray. Why all of this? Because that is what Christ wants to do with them, and so He chooses to do it through you. Recently, God loved me through my cousin asking me to be his sponsor. I love this guy; he is pure hearted and so many of his actions remind me of myself at his age. Not that it has to be that way, but when I first said yes, I didn’t fully think about what I was agreeing to be. I think this is the case for many sponsors. It becomes more of an honorable mention than a spiritual adoption of another’s soul. This is why I wrote this blog. Not just for you, but because I needed to hear this as well. I only have one shot in this life, so why not be all in or nothing. When God gives a gift, receive it and run with it.
