At the Pub: Let God Work through You

The beauty of a life living with Christ at the center is that you never know when the Lord will use you in amazing ways. Giving permission for our Lord to use you and disposing yourself to Him whenever He needs, will lead you to a life of fulfillment and purpose. And honestly, it's exciting to live a life disposed to our Lord, it keeps you on your toes. Me and another missionary were reminded of this yesterday.

After a full day of going to host meals, doing office work, playing basketball, and so much more, we headed to downtown Baltimore to go spend some time with a young adult’s group at a local pub. Me and three other missionaries parked our car and headed to where we knew the group was gonna eat. This particular group meets once a week and builds community and fellowship around prayer and penance. When we made it to the pub, there wasn’t enough room in the table, so me and one other missionary decided to play some pool on the open pool table in the restaurant. After playing a couple games, we noticed a guy sitting downcast at a table by himself, we'll call this guy Aaron. And so we decided to go up to Aaron and ask if he wanted to play a game of pool with us.

The more we talked, the more we noticed how shaken up he was. We asked him what happened, and hetold us he had been beaten and mugged earlier that day, and that everything he had on himself was stolen. His phone, his tablet, his rent money, and his $800 speaker, everything was gone… he seemed so dead, so helpless. His sweater and jacket were also ripped. He told us that earlier that day after he had been beaten, he was found dead. He also told us that this was the second time in his life that he had been pronounced dead, and the last time being when he was hit by a car going 70 mph while working his old job with pickup trucks on the side of a highway. Aaron was 21 years old and told us how he had no friends, but loved to take care of animals, and how he had been doing that for years.

You could tell that he was a good man, and he told us how he would never hurt anybody. He even said how earlier that day he had bought a homeless person a pizza. Aaron was jobless, but he still bought a pizza for some random person with a little bit of money from his social security. He didn’t understand why he was the one that was beaten. We told him that we couldn’t imagine what he was going through, but that there was someone else who did. We told him that there was someone else who was beaten even though he was a good person, we told him that this person had also been killed, even though he had never hurt anyone. This person was Jesus, and if anyone could understand what Aaron was going through it was Him. Aaron told us how he was so thankful for our presence, and us just talking to him.

This man had a crazy story, and it really puts your struggles into perspective. It's humbling to see how the Lord can use His people. We were just at some pub playing pool, but the Lord brought us there for so much more. We were brought there to pray with Aaron, talk with him, and just be present to him.
