Have you ever thought about being a missionary? Did you ever want to travel and do good in this country or somewhere else in the world? Being a missionary for Hard as Nails Ministries might be the option for you! At HN, the missionaries further the mission of awakening the world to the power of God’s Love by carrying out the vision of making a world where no one suffers alone. But what does all of this mean? What does a HN missionary specifically do for the ministry? Well, I will explain all of those burning questions for you and hopefully get you more interested in the missionary program!

For some context, at the time of writing I am a second-year missionary for HN, and I can gladly say it has been the wildest and craziest adventures of my life so far (I’m not married yet, which I am sure will trump this in terms of craziness)! But when I was first approached by the ministry, I really didn’t know what to think of it; it sounded like a great opportunity for me, but I was quite intimidated by the number of details I had to discern if I was truly going to commit to joining this ministry. Now, I have no regrets about joining, and the gifts I have received at this point are so many that listing them all would turn this blog into a book. When I look back, it was my openness to the ministry that led me to even considering joining, and I would like you all to have an open heart to what I have to say about this missionary program.

So, what is there to do as a missionary for HN? We already covered the mission and vision of HN, so what are some rules and regulations that the missionaries follow? Well, At HN, missionaries follow three rules, and these are Prayer, Two-by-Two, and Have Fun! Prayer means that every day we abide by a particular structure of prayer that includes the Liturgy of the Hours, Holy Hours, the Angelus, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and Rosary. For Two-by-Two, it means that every missionary will always be accompanied by at least one other missionary of the same gender at all times, and this helps for accountability and giving everyone a companion that they can always rely on being there by their side. Finally, Having Fun is exactly what it sounds like, having fun all the time! The HN missionaries choose joy and are called to see positivity wherever they go!

Within these rules, missionaries are tasked with living out the four pillars of Hard as Nails: Evangelization, Service to Youth, Sensitivity to Sin and Suffering, and Building Community. Evangelization calls all of the missionaries to spread the gospel and let everyone they meet that they are amazing! Service to Youth stands out as our primary focus is to reach out to the youth of this country, because they struggle so much. For Sensitivity to Sin and Suffering, missionaries are trained to look people they meet in the eyes and recognize that they are struggling and going through many challenges in life. Lastly, Building Community asks the missionaries to not find community and fellowship for themselves but to give to others a place full of support that they can come to.

So far, we have covered HN’s rules and the pillars the missionaries are called to live out, but what about its training, what is learned there? Well, HN has three focuses that the missionaries are instructed to follow, and they are Formation, Follow-up, and Service. Formation is all about the missionaries learning about the rules, structures, and other disciplines of the ministry and coming to an understanding and acceptance of them. Follow-up occurs when missionaries meet new people in Syracuse or out on the road, where their contact information is gathered to disciple them to bring them closer to Christ and if possible, see if they would like to join the missionary program! And finally, Service includes all of the work that is needed to keep the mission of HN going, such as office work, vehicle maintenance, and cleaning facilities.

Rules, pillars, and focuses, these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the life of a HN missionary, but they are by far the core elements that keep the missionary program going. Living out all these elements opens the door to a journey of transformation in life, and I can attest to having that own transformation in my own life. The choice is yours; I believe that the HN Missionary program is an excellent opportunity for young people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five but is ultimately up to you to choose if you think this program is for you. If you believe that now is that opportunity, don’t waste any time and feel free to apply for the Hard as Nails Missionary Program today!
