A Best Friend for Life

By:  Mission Team July 20, 2021

I did not grow up in a big family, in fact it was quite small.

I had a mother and father along with an older sister and that was it. I had always dreamed of having a little sister because I thought that it would have been so cool getting to watch her grow up, but nope, God had other plans. I never really knew what that was until I got older.

My sister and I fought all the time about the most ridiculous things, such as who left the hair in the hairbrush, or if she got more ice cream than I did. It was a madhouse most of the time because we were only 16 months apart, so we literally grew up together, and yet I got tagged the “little sister”, so I got the brunt of situations. My sister would linger being older over my head all the time, but I honestly didn't phase me because I was not the sharpest tool in the shed and did not understand the concept.

My family took a lot of road trips to Orlando, FL, because we only lived three hours away and had family who lived there. On these road trips, my sister and I liked to use the pull out  cup holder as a pillow, but we had to share. This meant that my head was always on the bottom and hers was on top. I finally had enough with it because my head would always hurt so I spoke up. She responded with, “Well I get the top for now, but when you're older than me you can have the top.” I fell for that every time. We got a new car a few years later and THAT is when I understood  I was never going to be older than her.

Growing up was a bit complicated, but our relationship really began to form into something beautiful as we got older. I had a really rough go with friends in High School. It wasn’t acceptable to be friends with everyone, you had to be in one certain group. I didn’t fit into many of the other groups and the one "friend" I had ended up hating me and made sure my social life was miserable.

My sister saw the effect it had on me and took me under her wing, allowing me to tag along with her friends.

This became one of the greatest blessings in my life. I was no longer alone and never would be again. Yes, my sister and I still have our moments here and there, but in the end we are always grounded in the friendship we established in each other.

know that I can always go to her with anything even when the situation seems to have no light to it. She always brings me towards the light. Getting older and being a missionary for a time has allowed me to get my life together more and now I have been able to do the same for her. We have helped bring each other out of the darkest times in our lives and I would not trade that for anything.

Never lose hope in your family, even if they have caused hurt to you throughout your life. Always give them another chance because, "you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” Give them the benefit of the doubt because in the end they become the greatest blessing in disguise in your life. Christ did this with us who were truly sinners and turned against Him, but He continued through and died on a cross so that we may be set free from our sins. So today show love and thanks to your families because in the end they deserve it.
